#InternationalDayofTheGirlChild

Keep quiet! Girls are not supposed to talk while boys are talking.

You are a girl child; you are groomed to build and manage a home.

Haven't you heard? A girl child ends up in a man's house. It is a waste of money and resources to invest in a girl child.

It's your fault that you were molested. If you tell anyone about this, I will kill you.

Oh! Girls are not supposed to be engineers, pilots, software programmers etc., because professions like that are more suited to boys.

For years, the girl child has faced societal prejudice. It beats my imagination that those who fought the rising and development of the girl child still celebrate the likes of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Oprah Winfrey, Malala Yousafzai, Kamala Harris.

I love what Barack Obama said; "You know, we're in a sports center. Imagine if you have a team, and you don't let half of the team play. That's stupid. That makes no sense. And the evidence shows that communities that give their daughters the same opportunities as their sons are more peaceful, more prosperous, they develop faster, and are more likely to succeed".

We need to do better as a society to make sure the rights of the girl child are protected. We need to augment the rights of the girl child by promoting girl's education; this will reduce abuses against the girl child, child marriages and other Gender-Based Violence as girls will be more informed.

You don't have to be in a position of power before you can make a difference. You can start from your homes. Encourage your female siblings, cousins, or friends to dream big and never shut down their voices. You can be a mentor to assist girls in developing better self-esteem, manoeuvre a male-dominated workplace, encourage the girl child to let her know that she is capable of anything and boldly stand up for herself.

By amplifying the rights of the girl child early enough, you'll help to create communities that are peaceful, prosperous and develop faster. You'll contribute to a generation of powerful women who are unflinching and unafraid to pursue their dreams and maximize their potentials.

Remember, it makes no sense to allow half of the team to play. The girl child represents the half of the team that is prevented from participating. Our society will become more prosperous and better developed if girls are equally allowed to play.

My shout-out goes to every girl child who, despite the prejudice, is still standing.

Girlsssssss, it is our day today! 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳

Digital generation. Our generation.
